A Guide to Lifelong Dental Hygiene

A healthy smile starts with everyday habits, and your oral health needs can change as you grow. From establishing brushing routines in childhood to protecting your teeth and gums in adulthood, consistent dental hygiene plays an important role in maintaining your smile at every stage of life. In honor of Dental Hygiene Month, explore essential oral care tips for every age to help you build healthy habits, prevent common dental concerns, and keep your smile healthy for years to come.

Childhood | Build healthy habits early!

Childhood is the perfect time to establish a dental hygiene routine that can last a lifetime. Parents and caregivers can help children learn the essentials while making oral care a positive part of their daily routine.

  • Start Early – Begin cleaning your baby’s mouth before their first tooth appears, and start brushing as soon as that first tooth comes in. Schedule their first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth erupting.
  • Toothpaste Portion – Children younger than three only need a small smear of fluoride toothpaste, about the size of a grain of rice. Children ages three through six can use a pea-sized amount. Keep an eye out during brushing to prevent swallowing toothpaste.
  • Establish a Brushing Routine – Encourage children to brush twice daily for two minutes and clean between their teeth once a day. Parents should help children brush until they have the coordination to do a thorough job independently, which is generally around ages 7–8. Make brushing fun with music, a fun dentist-approved toothbrush, or an interactive toothbrushing chart.
  • Mind Snacks and Beverages – Limit frequent sugary snacks and drinks, including during the holidays, to help reduce the risk of cavities. Drink lots of water and eat tooth-friendly snacks to support growing teeth.
  • Keep Up With Dental Appointments – Regular dental visits allow your dental team to monitor your child’s development, identify potential concerns, and recommend ways to improve their oral care routine. Your dentist can help determine the right frequency of visits for your child.

Establishing healthy dental habits early helps children understand the importance of caring for their smiles. With guidance and consistency, these habits can build a strong foundation for lifelong oral health.

Teens | Stay consistent!

Between school, extracurriculars, and social commitments, teens have a lot to balance. Maintaining a consistent dental hygiene routine can help protect their permanent teeth and support a healthy smile as they grow.

  • Orthodontic Care – Braces or clear aligners can help address alignment and bite concerns. A dental professional can help determine the best approach for each smile.
  • Take Extra Precautions for Sports & Activities – For teens who participate in contact sports or activities with a risk of facial injury, a properly fitted mouthguard can help protect their teeth and reduce the risk of dental injuries.
  • Avoid Harmful Substances – Tobacco and vaping products can negatively affect oral health, including gum health. Limiting sugary and acidic beverages can also help protect enamel from damage.

Consistent habits during the teen years can help protect permanent teeth and encourage independence in maintaining oral health hygiene well into adulthood.

Adulthood | Stick to the basics!

Between work, family responsibilities, and everyday commitments, it can be easy to put dental care on the back burner. Whether you’re maintaining habits you’ve had for years or building a routine for the first time, prioritizing your oral health hygiene can make a lasting difference.

Stress, lifestyle changes, and certain medications can affect your oral health. Keep these tips in mind to help maintain your smile:

  • Keep Up With Regular Dental Visits – Routine dental exams and cleanings help identify potential concerns before they progress. Keep your healthcare providers informed about changes in your health or medications that could affect your oral health.
  • Address Stress-Related Symptoms – Between teeth grinding and clenching, stress can impact your smile, leading to tooth wear, damage, or jaw pain during the day or even while you sleep. If you notice these symptoms, reach out to your doctor to discuss treatment options like a nightguard.
  • Keep an Eye Out for Dry Mouth – Medications and health conditions can reduce saliva production, increasing the risk of cavities and oral discomfort. Drink plenty of fluids (especially water) regularly and talk with your dentist about ways to manage persistent dry mouth.

Staying on top of your routine and regular dental visits can help protect your teeth and gums, address concerns early, and support a healthy smile to tackle work, family, and personal daily tasks and commitments.
