Dental Assistant vs. Certified Dental Assistant vs. Registered Dental Assistant: What’s the Difference?

If you’re considering a career in dental assisting, or you’re already working in the field and wondering what’s next, you might be asking: What’s the difference between a Dental Assistant (DA), a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA), and a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA)?

Dental assisting isn’t just a job — it’s a career path with real opportunities for growth. Whether you’re just getting started or looking to advance your credentials, there are clear steps you can take to expand your skills, increase your responsibilities, and broaden your dentist job growth opportunities.

Let’s walk through each role and what it takes to advance in the state of Michigan.

Dental Assisting
: Getting Started

A Dental Assistant plays a vital role in delivering high-quality patient care and keeping the dental office running smoothly.

On a typical day, a Dental Assistant may:

  • Set up the operatory and prepare materials for procedures
  • Greet patients, update health histories and take vital signs
  • Assist the Dentist chairside during procedures
  • Clean, disinfect, and sterilize operatories and instruments

Dental Assistants are often the calming presence patients rely on during treatment. They ensure procedures run efficiently while keeping patients comfortable and informed during dental care processes.

In Michigan, becoming a Dental Assistant can happen in two primary ways:

  • On-the-job training (Not offered at MCDC)
  • Completion of a formal dental assisting program

Some structured programs can be completed in as little as 10 weeks. Examples of schools offering dental assisting programs include:

  • Ross Medical Education Center
  • Dorsey College
  • Accelerated Academy

There are also local community-based programs throughout Michigan.

If you enjoy hands-on work and making a direct impact on patient’s through dental care, this is a strong starting point.

Certified Dental Assistant: Building Knowledge & Credentials

A Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) earns a nationally recognized credential through the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).

In the state of Michigan, a DA and CDA function in equal capacity regarding scope of practice. However, certification demonstrates a higher level of knowledge, commitment, and professional achievement.

To earn the CDA credential, you must:

  • Gain two years of hands-on experience
  • Pass the CDA examination administered by DANB

Even though scope of practice may not change in Michigan, earning your CDA is the next step in in your continued education to become a Registered Dental Assistant.

Registered Dental Assistant: Advanced Training & Expanded Scope

A Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) holds a Michigan state license and is permitted to perform expanded dental care duties beyond those of a DA or CDA.

To become an RDA in Michigan, candidates must:

  • Complete an expanded functions program at a community college accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA)
  • Complete required clinical hours
  • Pass state examinations
  • Obtain Michigan licensure

Michigan Community Colleges Offering Expanded Functions Programs

  • Delta College
  • Wayne County Community College District
  • Washtenaw Community College
  • Mott Community College
  • Northwestern Michigan College
  • Grand Rapids Community College

An RDA may be trained to perform expanded clinical procedures, depending on state regulations such as:

  • Place, condense, and carve amalgam restorations.
  • Final impressions for crowns, bridge, and dentures.
  • Fabrication of provionals.
